Upper extremity deep vein thrombosis: A case report on Paget-Schroetter syndrome
Author(s): Y Swetha
Abstract: Background: Deep venous thrombosis, a blood clot in a deep vein, can rarely occur in the upper extremities known as upper extremity deep vein thrombosis (UEDVT). Paget-Schroetter syndrome (PSS), also known as effort thrombosis, is a rare form of UEDVT caused by subclavian vein compression, often after vigorous upper limb activity.
Case presentation: This is a case of upper extremity deep vein thrombosis -Paget-Schroetter syndrome in a 25-year-old male patient whose presentation included short history of pain and swelling of the left upper limb after a week of strenuous activity in the gym following weight lifts.
Conclusion: Paget-Schroetter syndrome can occur in young individuals following vigorous activity, even without prior risk factors highlighting the need for early recognition and timely management to prevent life-threatening complications.
