Abstract: Tobacco smoking is a practice of burning tobacco with the smoke inhaled to be tasted and absorbed into the bloodstream. Tobacco use is well established as a major cause of death worldwide, accounting for about five to six million deaths per year worldwide. On current smoking patterns, about one billion deaths may occur from smoking during the 21st century, in contrast to ‘only’ 100 million deaths in the 20^th. Hence, the major public health priority is to increase the proportions of adults who quit smoking as well as to reduce the uptake of smoking by young adults and children. Describe the effects of smoking on public health in the United States. Review the risks to the fetus in a pregnant patient that smokes tobacco. Summarize the options available for helping patients discontinue tobacco abuse. Outline the options available to assist patients in smoking cessation and address the role of the interprofessional team in assisting patients quit smoking. Smoking harms nearly every organ of the body, causing many diseases and reducing the health of smokers in general. Quitting smoking has immediate as well as long-term benefits, reducing risks for diseases caused by smoking and improving health in general.
