A toxic blend: Ayurvedic remedy-induced bile pigment nephropathy and lead poisoning in a g6pd-deficient male with vitiligo

Abstract: We report a clinical scenario of a 30 year old young male with severe acute kidney injury in whom the kidney histopathology showed mild acute tubular necrosis with heme pigment deposits and 10% interstitial infiltration. An extensive clinical and investigational evaluation revealed consumption of multiple ayurvedic medications for vitiligo. Analysis of these ayurvedic medications revealed the presence of certain agents which cause haemolysis in G-6-PD deficient individuals, as was the case with this young man.
