Unveiling the medicinal properties of earthworms and their role in human health

Abstract: Earthworms have long been celebrated for their ecological contributions, but recent research has unveiled their significant medical potential as well. Traditional medicine systems, particularly Chinese and Ayurvedic practices, have historically utilized earthworm extracts to treat a variety of ailments. Modern scientific studies have validated many of these traditional claims, revealing bioactive compounds with wound-healing, anti-inflammatory, antimicrobial, anticancer, cardiovascular, and neuroprotective properties. The emerging field of vermineralization of health explores the therapeutic applications of earthworm-derived compounds, positioning these underground healers as a novel source of innovative treatments. From soil to skin, earthworms are showing remarkable pharmacological promise, offering new avenues for disease prevention and health promotion. By consolidating historical wisdom with contemporary scientific discoveries, this review aims to highlight the pharmacological potential of earthworms and emphasize their future prospects in revolutionizing traditional and modern medicine. Unlocking the secrets of the earthworm pharmacy could open the door to ground breaking advancements in human health.
