Abstract: Background: Thromboembolic events, including pulmonary embolism, cerebrovascular disease, and deep venous thrombosis, are significant complications in patients hospitalized with COVID-19. Identifying the risks for these events and emphasizing the use of anticoagulants is critical for prevention.
Aim of Study: The study aims to highlight the thromboembolic complications of COVID-19 and emphasize the importance of using anticoagulants to prevent these complications.
Methods: A prospective cross-sectional study was conducted on patients hospitalized with COVID-19 at Marjan Teaching Hospital from February 1 to April 1, 2021. The diagnosis was confirmed by chest CT and PCR. Data were collected on thromboembolic events and their association with clinical severity, past medical history, inflammatory markers (LDH, serum ferritin, D-dimer), and the use of anticoagulants (heparin or low molecular weight heparin). Thromboembolic events were diagnosed based on clinical signs and confirmed by appropriate imaging.
Results: Among 121 patients (mean age 54 ± 14 years; mean symptom duration 7 ± 3 days), 63.6% were male. Overweight was observed in 43%, obesity in 13.2%, and SPO2 below 94% in 61.2%. Thromboembolic events occurred in 16.53% of patients, with significant associations between these events and clinical severity, inflammatory markers, and comorbidities like hypertension and diabetes mellitus.
Conclusion: Thromboembolic events occurred in 16.53% of COVID-19 patients at Marjan Teaching Hospital, closely associated with the severity of clinical presentation, inflammatory markers, and comorbidities such as hypertension and diabetes mellitus. The risk increases with more severe clinical conditions and higher levels of inflammatory markers.
