Abstract: Introduction: The mosquito-borne virus dengue fever causes an inflammatory reaction throughout the body, which could affect glucose metabolism. A probable association between dengue infection and the development of diabetic mellitus (DM) has been suggested in recent investigations. Nevertheless, very little is known about the frequency or the processes that cause it. Finding out how often new-onset diabetes occurs in dengue fever patients and what factors put them at risk is the primary goal of this research.
Materials and Methods: A prospective observational research was performed on 50 patients diagnosed with dengue fever at a tertiary care facility. This study was conducted at the Department of General Medicine, Surabhi Institute of Medical Sciences, Mundrai, Telangana, India from March 2020 to February 2021. Individuals with pre-existing diabetes were excluded. Blood glucose levels, HbA1c, and inflammatory markers were assessed before admission, throughout hospitalization, and during a follow-up visit after four weeks. A statistical study was conducted to ascertain the incidence and predictors of new-onset diabetes mellitus.
Results: Temporary hyperglycemia was experienced by twelve out of fifty patients, which is twenty-four percent, during the acute phase of dengue fever. When the follow-up was performed, there were six patients who met the criteria for newly diagnosed diabetes mellitus, which is twelve percent. A number of potential causes were identified, including insulin resistance, pancreatic involvement, and increased inflammatory markers. An increased prevalence of persistent hyperglycemia was seen in patients who had severe dengue.
Conclusion: A subset of dengue fever patients may develop new-onset diabetes as a result of the inflammatory response that impacts insulin dynamics and pancreatic function. For early discovery and management, it is critical to recognize this relationship. We need further research on dengue survivors to determine the metabolic consequences in the long run.
