Prevalence of anemia in women with menorrhagia: A prospective study

Author(s): Nita Jha and Prabhakar Rao

Abstract:

Background and Objective: Menorrhagia, or excessive menstrual bleeding, is a frequent gynecological condition that significantly contributes to the development of anemia, particularly iron deficiency anemia, in women of reproductive age. The objective of this prospective study was to evaluate the prevalence of anemia in women presenting with menorrhagia and to assess its severity.

Materials and Methods: A prospective study was conducted over a 12-month period at a tertiary care center. This study was at the department of General Medicine, R. D. J. M. Medical College and Hospital, Muzaffarpur, Bihar, India from August 2018 to July 2019. A total of 40 women aged between 18 and 45 years, presenting with complaints of menorrhagia, were enrolled. Detailed menstrual and medical histories were recorded. Hematological investigations including complete blood count, serum ferritin, and peripheral blood smear were performed. Anemia was diagnosed and classified based on World Health Organization (WHO) criteria.

Results: Out of the 40 women with menorrhagia, 28 (70%) were found to be anemic. Among them, 16 (57.1%) had mild anemia, 9 (32.1%) had moderate anemia, and 3 (10.7%) had severe anemia. The mean hemoglobin level among anemic patients was 9.8 ± 1.2 g/dL. Serum ferritin levels were reduced in 85.7% of anemic patients, indicating iron deficiency as the predominant cause.

Conclusion: A high prevalence of anemia was observed among women with menorrhagia, with iron deficiency identified as the leading cause. Routine screening for anemia in patients with menorrhagia is recommended to enable timely diagnosis and appropriate management.
