Prevalence of lipid and glycemic abnormalities in newly diagnosed hypertensive patients: A cross-sectional study

Author(s): BS Nehru and Abdul Majid Khan

Abstract: Background: Hypertension is a significant risk factor for cardiovascular diseases, and its association with lipid and glycemic abnormalities increases the risk for comorbidities, including diabetes and cardiovascular diseases. This study aimed to assess the prevalence of lipid and glycemic abnormalities in newly diagnosed hypertensive patients and to identify the relationships between these metabolic conditions.
Materials and Methods: A cross-sectional study was conducted at Meenakshi Medical College, Chennai, from March 2018 to February 2019. A total of 100 newly diagnosed hypertensive patients, aged 30-70 years, and were selected through simple random sampling. Blood pressure measurements were obtained using a standard sphygmomanometer, and fasting blood samples were collected for lipid profiling and blood glucose estimation. An oral glucose tolerance test (OGTT) was also performed to assess glycemic abnormalities.
Results: Of the 100 participants, 58% had Stage 2 hypertension, and 42% had Stage 1 hypertension. The prevalence of Type 2 diabetes mellitus (T2DM) was found to be 5%, while 16% of patients exhibited impaired glucose tolerance (IGT). A striking 79% of patients had normal glucose tolerance. In terms of lipid abnormalities, elevated triglycerides (60%) and low HDL cholesterol (84%) were prevalent, along with high total cholesterol (55%) and LDL cholesterol (34%). These findings indicate a strong association between hypertension and lipid/metabolic disturbances.
Conclusion: The study highlights the high prevalence of lipid abnormalities and deranged glucose metabolism in newly diagnosed hypertensive patients, underscoring the need for routine metabolic screenings in this population. Early identification and management of these abnormalities may help reduce cardiovascular risks and improve patient outcomes.
